Help Your Kids Learn & Love the Bible by Danika Cooley (Review)

Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

Are you missing the tools you need to help your children have a strong relationship with God? Or would you like to learn new tools for you and your family? Help Your Kids Learn and Love the Bible, written by Danika Cooley and published by Bethany House Publishers could be the book you’ve been looking for.

This book is divided into three parts, “You’re the Leader”, “Faithful Reading,” and “A Daily Walk.” Each of these section will help you build a strong and purposeful Biblical family life.

“You’re the Leader” focuses on how you need to take control by planning the best way for your family to study the Bible, it all depends on the age, and how to fit it into your daily plan. “Faithful Reading” focuses on how to read the Bible that honors God, interpret scripture, and have valuable discussions with your children. “A Daily Walk” is all about tools and resources that will help you and your family have a variety of ways to have engaging ways to consistently have Bible study time.

Our Experience:

When I learned about this book I was intrigued. Both of my children are in high school and have been actively studying the Bible with adults since they were young children, so I wanted to see if I could learn something that would help them moving forward.

I read this book thoroughly and learned some new tools for myself and ones I can share with others. I learned

  • that different versions of the Bible have different reading levels (that way you can pick the best children’s Bible.)
  • about developing a Bible-reading cheat sheet for the different books of the Bible.
  • that you should be aware that you don’t take the verses out of context.
  • to give plenty of praise for a job well done in memorization.
  • to be aware of your child’s learning style (auditory, visual, and kinesthetic).

There were many other topics of interest, but these were the ones that caught my eye that would work best for those in high school or my general interest.

Text from Chapter Four

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed reading and learning from Help Your Kids Learn & Love the Bible, by Danika Cooley, because she provided many useful Bible study tools. As I was reading the book, I folded the corners of the pages I thought were most important (something I rarely do). I wanted to remember where the most memorable parts are.

I always think that nonfiction books are easier to read when they have personal stories from the authors. I enjoyed learning how Mrs. Cooley and her husband, Ed, worked together to have family Bible study time. The anecdotes about her children were a lot of fun. It was neat how they would grasp some of the tough concepts at a young age. I’m grateful that she is taking her knowledge and sharing it with us.

I would like to see the resources that were mentioned in a list at the end of the book as I liked the resources she has used with her children. I do appreciate the “Notes” and “Works Consulted” sections.

I think that this book would be the perfect gift for any new parent, new Christian parent, or any parent who is looking for the tools to strengthen their children’s relationship with God.

Black-Mountain-LeAnne-Hardy

The fire has been put out at the house at Cewi Glen, and Teg has discovered and taken the olivewood cup that Colin Hay brought home from Glastonbury Abbey. She feels that there is a strange power in this cup, and it could represent a better power than that of the Grandmother, whom she has been serving for many years. She is uncertain of the power, which is understandable, based on her past relationship with the church. Circumstances demand that she leave the area, so she finds her way to Glastonbury to learn more about the cup. While she’s there, she meet’s Alice, Colin’s fiancée. Alice’s family has been risking their lives to teach the Bible to others in English, instead of Latin as the churches do,and introduces Teg to a God that she didn’t believe existed. She leaves though, before Colin can arrive for the wedding and tell the others who she really is. Teg becomes determined to visit the land where Jesus lived and died and learn more about the wooden cup. She goes there, learns of Jesus, and comes back 7 years later to Honddu Vale a changed woman. Will the others in the area believe that she’s changed, or will they believe those who still wield the Grandmother’s amulets?

Alice is having her own trying time in Honddu Vale during that 7 years, because she knows she isn’t a lady as Catherine Price is and in unable to produce an heir for Colin. She desperately misses Goody Tegwyn (Teg), but she tries her best. Is it enough? What will Alice do when Teg comes back? Will she believe what everyone believes of Teg, or will she stick to what she knows?

You can go here to learn more about Black Mountain and the others in the series. You will be able to read a sample chapter, learn what is was like for LeAnne Hardy to write the book, and see the discussion questions.

About the Author-

LeAnne Hardy is married and has 2 daughters, 2 sons-in-law, and three grandchildren and currently lives in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. She grew up outside of Indianapolis, Indiana and has lived in 6 countries on four continents. She has also lived in Ethiopia, Brazil, Mozambique, South Africa, and England. Her other books in the Glastonbury Grail Series are Glastonbury Tor and Honddu Vale.  She has also written books for young adults, Keeping Secrets, The Wooden Ox, Between Two Worlds, and Crossroads.

My thoughts-

-I’m going to have to begin my thoughts with a big, “Thank you!” for the “Notes on Names and Pronunciation” guide. I had no idea how most of the names or places should be pronounced. I’ve discovered that it’s important to check the guide once in a while, so I can make sure that I’m pronouncing Addoc’s name, ATH-ock and not ADD-ock (plus others). When I discuss the book with others, I want to make sure I’m saying everything correctly.

-I think that all of us can relate to both Teg and Alice. We can relate with Teg as to how it was before we built our relationship with God, or how we sometimes feel or believe when we think that it was God who wronged us in a certain situation. God is always there watching us and caring, but Satan and others can complicate the situation when we don’t know God well enough. It can be especially damaging if we build a realationship with Satan or the Grandmother as in Teg’s case. The Grandmother had such a hold over Teg. It even caused her to still be looked upon as a witch when she came back to Cewi Glen after seven years of being away. It was very hard for others to believe that Teg had changed while she was in Israel, Turkey, and the countries she traveled through. This book shows us that sometimes we need to forgive others and accept that they’ve changed, even if it’s hard. It was very hard for Colin and the others that knew her as a witch. It wasn’t hard for Alice, who never knew Teg as a witch, but only a healer. Speaking of Alice, to me, she represents me and all of us who have a great faith in God, but that it can be shaken at times. Alice’s faith was shaken at times, because she believed what others said to her about being a peasant and her insecurities about not being able to produce an heir for Colin. Catherine and Elwina sometimes held onto the old ways and that didn’t help Alice’s focus. We need to keep in mind that God is always there at that we should focus on Him and keep on praying and hoping.

-As I read the part of the book when Teg was near Glastonbury with Alice and her family, I was intrigued with Nicholas, her brother-in-law. The power of God that was within him was very strong and noticeable. I would be interested in reading a book that covers more of his story. What I learned of him showed me how strong God can shine in the dark times.

-I highly recommend this book to everyone who has and hasn’t read the rest of the books in the series. You will learn about the power of God through life, redemption, and forgiveness.

My God Loves Me Bible written by Cecilie Fodor and illustrated by Gavin Scott (Book Review!)

(received in exchange for an honest review)

My-God-Loves-Me-Bible

Do you know a little one who needs a first Bible? With 18 Bible stories from Genesis to Jesus’s resurection, the My God Loves Me Bible begins to bring the Bible alive for young ones. Each of the stories has a title, one sentence take away, Bible story, and verses that need to be looked up and read by someone older. These cardboard pages also include bright and colorful life-like illustrations.

About the Author and Illustrator-

Cecilie Fodor is the author of Parables of the Bible and an editor at Scandinavia Publishing House.

Gavin Scott is an illustrator of a number of children’s books including My Bedtime Bible Prayers.

My thoughts-

– This sturdy cardboard book has a nice red handle, padded cover, and rounded corners. I really like the rounded corners, because nobody will be hurt by sharp corners. I like the charming illustrations with their bright colors and realistic animals and people.

– I’m not sure if it is this way with all the copies of this book, but my pages were lightly stuck together. I would make sure that you open all of the pages first, so the child won’t get upset when they can’t look at their book.

– I really like the “My God Loves Me” phrase that goes along with each story, because they are important phrases that we should always remember, and it is best to learn them at a young age. The story is short enough to keep the child’s attention. You’ll want to make sure that you have your Bible handy, because for each story there are more verses to read. You can read them with your child or on your own.

I highly recommend this book for the young children in your life.

My Bedtime Bible Prayers written by Karoline Pahus Pedersen and illustrated by Gavin Scott (Book Review!)

(received in exchange for an honest review)

My-Bedtime-Bible-Prayers

Do you have a young child in your life that is interested learning how to pray and the Bible verses that correspond? My Bedtime Bible Prayers is that book. This book contains 44 Bible verses and corresponding prayers. Extra Bible verses and discussion questions are included. Some of these prayers are

  • “May We Choose You”
  • “All Children are Welcome”
  • “God is Faithful”
  • “Give God Your Worries”
  • “Made By God”
  • “Truths about God”
  • “I Am Brave”
  • “Choose Goodness”

About the Author and Illustrator-

Karoline Pahus Pedersen is an author of a number of children’s books including Bible Promises for Babies.

Gavin Scott is an illustrator of a number of children’s books including the My God Loves Me Bible.

My thoughts-

– I like the table of contents, because the parent and child can pick the prayer that will work for them at a specific period in time. One example would be “Peaceful Sleep” on page 34. It lists Psalm 4:8 (written out), Psalm 121:4-6 (use a Bible), a prayer about sleeping and having a peaceful rest, and a discussion about what to do when you wake up at night. This prayer and verse sequence will help all children be relaxed as they drift off to sleep.

– I know that the title is My Bedtime Bible Prayers, but these prayer and verse sequences can be done at any time of the day. Subjects that can be done any time of the day are gratefulness, being blessed, God is with us, and there are more I haven’t listed.

– I like the lightly padded cover, because it adds depth and comfort for young children. The illustrations by Gavin Scott are colorful and child friendly. They are very realistic and all children will enjoy them.

– The suggested ages are 6-8, but I think that children who are younger and older will enjoy this book and learn the importance of praying.

I highly recommend this book for the young children in your life.

They Call Me Mom by Michelle Medlock Adams and Bethany Jett (Book Review)

(received in exchange for an honest review)

They-Call-Me-Mom-Medlock-Adams-Jett

Are you a mom who needs some encouragement? Or do you know a mom who could use some encouragement? They Call Me Mom: 52 Encouraging Devotions for Every MOMent, written by Michelle Medlock Adams and Bethany Jett, was written for moms everywhere.

There are 52 devotions that cover the good and the bad of motherhood. Here is a small selection of the chapter titles:
“They Call Me Teacher”
“They Call Me Embarrassing”
“They Call Me Scaredy-cat”
“They Call Me Out”
“They Call Me Safe Zone”
“They Still Call Me”

They write from their own experiences with their daughters and sons. Please go here to find an excerpt from this devotional.

About the Authors-

Michelle Medlock Adams currently lives in Indiana with her husband, where she is a journalist, speaker, author, and ghostwriter. She’s written Dinosaur Devotions, and many more. She can be reached at www.michellemedlockadams.com.

Bethany Jett currently lives in Florida with her husband and boys. Her latest book is Through the Eyes of Hope and it’s devotional. She too is a speaker, author, and she works from home. She can be reached at www.bethanyjett.com.

They both co-own Platinum Literary services and write weekly columns for “Hot Mess but Blessed,” a newspaper in Missouri.

My thoughts-

-The table of contents is great, because I can read the name of the chapters and pick which one is calling to me. One that caught my eye was “They Call Me Chauffeur,” because that’s exactly what I’ve been doing since the school year began. As I read the chapter, I got some good ideas for snacks, and I learned it’s a great time to have good talks with family members. We should always take advantage of being a chauffeur. There were also many other good topics in the different devotional chapters like cheerleader, chef, mama bear, worry wart, and sentimental.

-This book is just what I need to end my day on a positive note. Michelle Medlock Adams and Bethany Jett, who are so encouraging, can make even the worst situations look towards God and be positive. At the end of each chapter, they share ideas about each topic and the Bible verses that correspond.

They Call Me Mom is one of those books that so well written, that I could just read it all day and soak up the wisdom and stories they have to share. The Bible verses spoke to me and gave me peace.

I highly recommend this book to all those moms out there who need a morning boost or evening encouragment!

God’s Mail: Volume 3 by Ron Hardin (Review)

We received this product to review!

God's Mail

Are you looking to strengthen your relationship with God? Are you having a difficult time finding devotions that speak to you? Perhaps God’s Mail Volume 3, by Ron Hardin, from God’s Mail, is what you’re looking for.  This book contains over 90 poems and many corresponding Bible verses from different versions (NJKV, TLB, GW, AMP, MSG, and more).

Mr. Hardin has written these poems and selected these Bible verses for both believers and non-believers alike. Many of them are based on his own experiences with being in jail, in a gang, dropping out of school, and the use of drugs. In this third volume he uses those experiences to encourage and strengthen those dealing with more serious subjects such as abortion, suicide, passing of others, but also the troubles that come to us every day.

About Ron Hardin:

Mr. Ron Hardin is currently married and has 4 children and 5 grandchildren. Mr. Hardin and his wife are both ordained ministers.

Our Experience:

As a believer in God, I’m always interested in trying new devotionals, so I can learn a new perspective about God and share it with others. I was very interested in this devotional, because I hadn’t read one with poems and corresponding Bible verses before. I thought that using different versions of Bible for the verses was nice, because different versions call to people differently. I personally find that some are easier to read and understand, so I really liked that about this devotion.

Poem_Verses_2

I really wanted to try journaling while reading this book. I found that it didn’t work for me,  because many of the poems don’t apply to me. For example, I’m not divorced, don’t have substance abuse, or am depressed. Since I wasn’t able to journal, I decided to just mark the pages and verses that moved me. It worked really well. I know I can go back to those pages for inspiration and comfort.

Mama’s Thoughts:

As someone who has written a number of poems and read poems of other authors, I don’t think they all needed to rhyme. It made it harder for me to read them, because they didn’t flow well for me. I did read the poems before the verses, because then the verses impacted me in a more powerful and positive way.

-Some of these poems are very dark, but I think that’s because they are based on his life experiences. He has written these poems and shared these verses, so that he can help those who are currently experiencing the same pain. If you don’t find that some of these problems are relevant to you, move on. When you find the subjects that are relevant at this point in your life, these poems and verses will speak to you. And you’ll grow closer to God.

We received this product to review!

The Heart Changer

The Heart Changer from SchoolhouseTeachers.com teacher – Jarm Del Boccio, Author is a fictional version of the story of Naaman from 2nd Kings  from Miriam’s point-of-view.

Twelve-year-old Miriam is captured during a raid on her village by Naaman’s army and is brought to Syria to be his wife’s maidservant. She is devastated and filled with anger and resentment towards all who are associated with Naaman. She feels she has been abandoned by God and her faith wavers. The-Heart-Changer-Cover-Page

Our Experience:

I’ve realized that over the years that as the children have gotten older and can read to themselves, we haven’t dedicated much time towards family read-aloud time. I’m now choosing to dedicated time and energy to choosing books that will be enjoyed by all. I thought that C would enjoy this story (it could be our special book), and I was right. We spent a number of afternoons curled up on the couch, me reading and C coloring, learning about Miriam and her influence on Naaman’s family and his servants.

Mama’s Thoughts:

–  The descriptions in this book were excellent, and it flowed so smoothly that I wanted to stop and read it to myself instead of reading aloud. We learned about the foods eaten (dates, bread, Falafel, humus and more), environmental conditions in the Middle East, clothing, and lifestyle for that time period.

-The Teacher’s Guide can be found here. Just click on the corresponding graphic. This guide includes an interview with Jarm Del Boccio, section with information about Miriam (favorite color and questions to think about), information about the setting, questions for your family to discuss, 2 Syrian recipes (I didn’t use them, because I couldn’t figure out how to best make them vegetarian), and a section for notes. My favorite part of the study guide was some of the questions about what different names mean, those in the book and our own and all of the names of God.

– I like the short chapters, because it encourages younger readers to continue on. It also makes it easier for read-aloud time, because we don’t have to stop in the middle of a chapter if we have only a little bit of time available.

B’s Thoughts (boy, age 15, officially in ninth grade and in public school):

B is busy with public school, so you will not see many reviews from him.

C’s Thoughts (girl, age 13, officially in seventh grade):

The Heart Changer is about a girl who is captured and taken to serve the wife of Naaman, the commander of the Syrian army.

Here are somethings I liked about this book.

1. It is very detailed and describes lots of little details.

2. This is a good book to read when you want something quick and easy to read.

3. This book is based off of 2 Kings Chapter 5 in the Bible, which I thought was really cool.

Here is something I did not like about this book.

1. This book ends abruptly, and it doesn’t include much about Mariam finding her family.

I think this book would be good for people of all ages because you can read it or have it read aloud to you.

Learn How to be a Kid Entrepreneur from The Kingdom Code! (Review)

We received this product to review!

      The Kingdom Code

Over the past few years my daughter has been interested in starting her own business. I’ve never been sure of the exact steps to take, because I’ve never been self-employed. That’s why I was excited to learn about The Complete Starter Kit from The Kingdom Code. This kit includes the following:

      • A Textbook with 244 full-color pages with the specific steps to take.
      • 124 full-color Activities, Forms, and Notices
      • Worksheets for each of the 27 lessons (is to take 34 weeks) to review and reinforce what the Textbook teaches.
      • A Teacher’s Guide that takes the teacher step-by-step through each of the lessons.
      • TKC Treasure Map that is used to track the end of each lesson.
      • Flash Cards that contain accounting terms, economic terminology, business terms, and all other vocabulary terms need to learn about business.
      • 3 full-color posters that go into the sleeves of the binders.
      • Bonus reward stickers that are to be placed on the Treasure Map when they complete a lesson and more stickers for when they do extra work.

      Our Experience:

C has been interested in starting her own business in the past and was very interested when I showed her The Complete Starter Kit from The Kingdom Code. I knew that this program could give her the exact steps needed to begin and continue a business while doing it all in the name of God.

She was really excited when the box came. We had to get to work right away to get everything organized, so we could begin the lessons. We got the items out of the plastic wrap and into the 3-ring binders. After that I took a look at the Teacher’s Guide to see what the next step was. I discovered that this entreprenurial program has been designed with 1 lesson taking a week and several of them taking more than one week. Each of the weekly lessons has 2 to 4 days worth of activities that are to last around 45 minutes. I initially planned on having C work on 1 lesson per week as dictated. The first couple of lessons didn’t take much time, so we were able to complete 2 days of lessons in 1 day. As we got deeper into more involved lessons, we did 1 day per scheduled time.

Since this program is mostly led by the teacher (me!), it was important for us to follow these steps that were given in the Teacher’s Guide.

      • Proclamation (3-5 minutes)- I would read the lesson Proclamation to C. She would stand, repeat it back to me, then put on the Armor of God.
      • Check Your Path (3-5 minutes)- She would begin her worksheet.
      • Quest for the Clue (15-20 minutes)- In this section C was introduced to the goals and theme for the week’s lesson. It ended with a Clue that summarized everything.
      • Code of Honor (3-5 minutes)- C learned at least one Bible verse and learned the focus of the lesson through the Character Code.
      • Treasure Seeking (15-20 minutes)- In this section C heard different stories, gathered ideas, and completed activities. At the end of this section there was a Treasure that summarized the section.
      • On Your Own (times vary)- This was a time for C to complete more activities and projects that were relevant to finishing the lesson. This is also when she would complete her worksheet and place her sticker for the lesson on the Treasure Map. (If this class is done in a classroom setting, students may need to take the work home to finish.) Some completed pages.

      Finished-Pages

      • Please keep in mind that these times are just estimates and not all are included in each daily lesson. Some of these steps took much longer for us, because C had a difficult time coming up with ideas relating to her business.

      20190618_213639

      Mama’s Thoughts:

-I really appreciated the Teacher’s Guide. It told me exactly what I needed weekly and daily. I never had any questions about what needed to have C working on. A future lesson for us to learn.

      Weekly-Lesson

-The Textbook teaches everything that a student needs from learning about business to developing a business plan to keeping ledgers to goal making to good decision making skills in a step-by-step process with consistency between the lessons. I think that is great for children who need that consistency in their school lessons. I also like how it is geared to different grade levels, so many children can benefit from learning how to successfully deal with money throughout their lives.

      Title-Page

      Textbook-Pages

The Kingdom Code Coloring Book is going to be perfect for C when she wants to have fun coloring with her pencils. She’ll also learn from the Bible verses that are on each page. I really appreciate these verses, because they will also help her to have a deeper relationship with the Lord.

      Coloring-book

-The JR KCK Budget Kit is the last product came from The Kingdom Code and is perfect for younger children. It shows them how to budget using the JOEYS (Jesus, Others, Education, Yourself, and Savings) plan. I like how it shows exactly how much (percentage) goes to each section. There are instructions and even a sticker if the child would like to have a business.

B is busy with public school, so you will not see many reviews from him.

C’s Thoughts (girl, age 13, officially in seventh grade):

I am using The Kingdom Code to start a baking business called Pinkish Land Desserts.

      Pinkish Land Desserts

Here is what I liked about it.

      1. You get to start any kind of business, and it is really cool.

      2. This program helps you make a good business plan before you even start advertising or anything else.

      3. It helps you divide the money you make into 5 different categories- Jesus, Others, Education, Yourself, and Savings.

Here is what I didn’t like.

      1. Some of the activities were more complicated for me to do, because having a baking business involves a lot of supplies compared to other businesses.

      2. It is really hard to pick a logo, name, and slogan that all fit together while looking nice and sounding good.

      3. You really have to know exactly what you’re doing to make this program easier.
